I joined YoungMinds as Chief Executive, the leading national charity promoting emotional well-being and mental health for children and young people in May 2008. I feel passionately about creating opportunities for young people to grow and develop in positive ways. I have over 25 years experience championing their causes, with a career starting in youth and community work, teaching and youth counselling.
I have has always worked in the third sector and am also very interested in what makes effective organisations, gaining an MSc in Voluntary Sector Organisation at LSE in 1990. I was Chief Executive of Motiv8 working with young offenders on the south coast for five years, and Director of Services at Centrepoint, the youth homelessness charity for seven years. As a freelance management consultant I applied my experience and knowledge to interim chief executive positions, young people’s services evaluation and development.
With extensive experience as a trustee as well as developing organisations and working with vulnerable young people, I became a qualified coach, was the initial chair of the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition for the last two years, and now continue to be a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group for Mental Health as well as the Children’s Health Outcomes Framework Steering Group and currently chair the KCL/UCL Child IAPT Collaborative Steering Group.
I look after my own wellbeing by hiking up mountains at the first opportunity – including Everest Base Camp two years ago, being trained by my effervescent springer spaniel and relaxing with quality wines and good films!
